Braves may have ended their season on October 5 and brought baseball to
an end in Atlanta, and yet "pinch hitting" was in full effect for the
Concours at Jim Ellis Porsche on October 7. Concours chairman
Jeff Frye had made arrangements to attend a wedding in Pinehurst, North
Carolina and Co-chair Tom Roy had stepped up to manage the event.
Four days prior to the event, due to a pending job change, Tom was
called to Houston, Texas. Enter our "pinch hitter," Bob
Kuchenbecker. Bob willingly (even eagerly?) stepped forward to
fill the gap and stage the event and carried it out in spectacular
fashion. As has been our experience in recent years though,
weather threatened early on but improved as the day progressed.
Nineteen cars registered for the event and were positioned as they
arrived. Lunch was provided by Doug McIntyre, the General Manager
of Jim Ellis Porsche and the turnout was so great everything was
consumed by the crowd in attendance. When this writer pulled into
the dealership from Pinehurst around 1pm, the display area was full of
people and spectators' cars lined the road for a good 200 yards down
past the dealership. A wide range of Porsches chose to participate
ranging from a 1962 356 through the earlier air-cooled 911s,
front-engined 944s up to the latest Boxster Spyder. Bob's well
organized judging teams went to their tasks and made quick work of
their duties while our experienced scoring team tabulated the
scores. Awards were then given out to the
participants.
Congratulations to Tom McCoy on the selection of his 1964 356 C Coupe
for People's Choice. Our thanks go out to Jim Ellis Porsche on
providing the site for our event and for providing lunch.
Thanks also to all our volunteers listed below and apologies to anyone
who may have been inadvertently omitted. Also thanks to George
Pearl for providing pictures of the event.
This concludes the 2012 season for Concours D'Elegance but we look forward to having a full schedule of events in 2013.
